Details

Located near the iconic Komtar tower and along the same road as Kwong Wah Yit Poh newspaper in Lebuh Presgrave lies 888 Hokkien Mee, a roadside stall serving Penang Hokkien Mee. Not to be confused with the thick soy sauce-based Hokkien mee, Penang Hokkien Mee is what’s known as prawn mee to folks outside the Pearl of the Orient.

The Hokkien Mee here is quite simple for the most part and very flavourful, with the very same ingredients that were used when the dish first came into existence in the 1940s. The broth is still made up of prawn heads, while addition of pork slices, chili paste, small prawns, and watercress leaves are also thrown into the mix together with wheat or rice noodles. 888 Hokkien Mee also adds a few extra ingredients that stretch the boundaries of this classic dish, be it roast pork, braised pork trotter, pork skin, pork intestines, pork ribs, large fish balls, eggs, and a few others.
