Popular hawker fare in Penang includes fried char koay teow and the light noodle dish known as koay teow th’ng. The Ah Soon Char Koay Teow stall in Tanjung Bungah Penang is the perfect place to try these two delicacies if you stay nearby Hillside.
The shop, which serves its signature koay teow thng (flat rice noodles) and char koay teow, was established in Kafe Huat Heng in 1983 by Tang Teow Soon (also known as Ah Soon). Tang Chun Siang, with the assistance of his wife and son, runs a family-run business that provides delivery services to those living in the Tanjung Bungah region.
Soon after the company developed into a well-liked food stall, Ah Soon moved it to a more prominent location farther along the street, where it now operates as Ah Soon Cafe. Despite the change in place, many customers are still returning because Ah Soon provides delicious food, particularly char koay teow, which is still grilled over charcoal.
If time allows, he also keeps up the delivery service. Ah Soon explains, “I will still get them delivered to you (in the Tanjung Bungah region) as long as you order three packets on each order. The Char Koay Teow costs RM4.50. The char koay teow with lard, chives, crunchy bean sprouts, Chinese sausage, prawns and cockles is fried over a charcoal fire.
