Since the early 1980s, the Jin Hoe nasi lemak booth has been a Pulau Tikus breakfast institution. The younger Mr. Lee Khi Soon, whose grandmother founded the company, is currently in charge. His father, Johnnie Lee, was also somewhat of a Pulau Tikus celebrity, known for being talkative, and was in charge of turning Jin Hoe Nasi Lemak into the well-known dish it is today.
Assam/tamarind-marinated fried fish and shell-on shrimp, some slivers of cucumber, and an essential dollop of extremely hot sambal belacan are all included in Jin Hoe’s rendition of Penang-Nyonya nasi lemak.
Near the Pulau Tikus Market, on Cantonment Road at number 46, is where you’ll find Jin Hoe. Except on Fridays and Sundays, it is open daily from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (unless they sell out earlier; this can happen as early as 10 a.m.). Mr. Lee is infamous for being slack about keeping his operation days, and his booth has occasionally been left closed without warning.
