In 1999, a local Butterworth-based family created Khunthai. The idea was to simply create a welcoming ambiance reminiscent of a Thai village where guests could relax while listening to Thai music and enjoying affordable, freshly prepared Thai food. They are proud to state that all of our kitchen staff members are Thai. Since opening their first restaurant, they now have four locations, with a fifth set to open by the end of 2012.

Khunthai has grown throughout the years from a small beginning of just 10 tables to its current capacity of more than 280 tables. To guarantee that the food was of the highest quality and consistency, a factory was established to serve as a central kitchen. They self-planted and self-harvested fresh green veggies to provide freshness and meet demand.

The walls at Khunthai include beautiful wood treatments and an attap roof with timber log pillars that were self-designed and built. The dining tables and benches are constructed from rail wood sleepers and bar tops with generously thick wood.
