At Solok Moulmein in Pulau Tikus, one of Penang’s oldest still-open apom manis stands can be found. Beginning in 1920, the family-run company has been successfully running every morning at Swee Kong Coffee Shop for the past 80 years. The koptiam has been rebrand, now it’s called Keat Hoe. Their apom manis are still prepared using a charcoal stove and clay pots as opposed to steel pots that are heated by gas, in accordance with a centuries-old custom. This scene is unique to Penang and perhaps even all of Malaysia.
