Super Hokkien Mee @ One Corner Kopitiam

Popular

Details

It has a long history. His father, Lim Kow Leong, was the first Hokkien mee seller about 60 years ago at the old Kim San coffeeshop on the corner of MacAlister Road and Rangoon Road. Lim Bok Huat, the current stallholder, inherits this legacy from his father. A few times, the kopitiam was renamed Sin Kim San, but now it is Sih Jing San.

On the crossroads of Burmah Road and Rangoon Road, the older Lim Kow Leong had then relocated his Hokkien mee stand in 1981, instantly behind the then-newly-opened and wildly popular Super Departmental Store. After the Super Departmental Store, where it appeared like every Penangite wanted to shop, he gave his stall the moniker Super Hokkien Mee.

In Penang, Super Hokkien Mee became nearly legendary among Hokkien mee aficionados, with huge waits and customers who were ready to wait for their bowl of noodles for an hour or two. By then, Lim Bok Huat and his younger brother had taken over from their father the task of running the stall daily.

In 2006, One Corner Cafe debuted in Jalan Bawasah, becoming the newest hawker restaurant in town. Mr. Lim Bok Huat went to One Corner Café on May 18, 2006, enticed by the lower rent price, whereas his younger brother chose to go to Taiwan.
