Logan Building: A Historic Landmark Restored to Glory in Penang

The Logan Building, located in Penang’s Core Zone of George Town, is a historic double-frontage building that dates back to 1883. Designed in the Victorian architectural style, it was the first large-scale complex of shops and offices in Penang.

The building’s central archway, serving as a porte-cochere and inner courtyard, was a hub of activity in its prime. Many prominent businesses and firms were based here, including the Pinang Gazette newspaper, the Hongkong & Shanghai Bank, and the legal firm Logan and Ross.

Over time, the building underwent structural damage due to the tropical climate and proximity to the sea. In the 1930s, a renovation led by architect Lim Soo Loon transformed the building into a two-story structure with a blend of Victorian and Art Deco styles. The upper floor was removed, and an Art Deco stepped parapet was added to the center.

In recent years, the building underwent a restoration project funded by OCBC Bank and managed by Tec Century. The repair, completed by y Architects Sdn Bhd, was honored in the PAM Awards 2010’s Conservation Buildings category. 2010 saw the building’s public reopening under the new moniker Logan Heritage.

Today, Logan Heritage is home to a variety of food and beverage enterprises, a facility for exchanging currencies, a store selling electronics, and other hip commercial businesses. The building serves as a dynamic destination for both locals and visitors alike and stands as a tribute to Penang’s architectural legacy thanks to its rich history and restored attractiveness.
