Penang Hill’s Historic Bungalows

Penang Hill boasts a collection of bungalows, including the historic Convalescent Bungalow from 1803, showcasing a blend of British colonial, Asian, and modern architectural styles.

Among these bungalows is Bel Retiro, originally constructed in 1789 for the Governor of Penang. Today, it remains exclusively used by the government and holds great prestige. Initially serving as a resort for high-ranking officials and dignitaries, Bel Retiro Bungalow was a favored retreat for the first Yang di-Pertuan Agung (King) and Tunku Abdul Rahman (Prime Minister) during their visits to Penang. Other senior government officers constructed their bungalows nearby, following the principle of proximity to greatness. Although the Bel Retiro bungalow is off-limits to the general public, the Gate House, a beautiful brick structure with an arched entrance, offers a delightful photo opportunity for hikers.
